Digital twins

Digital twin, avatar or AI agent? Shared words, different products

A talking face, a building model and an assistant that uses tools can appear under the same label. The distinction becomes clearer when we ask what each represents, what data it receives and what it can do.

The question comes before the label

A demonstration can impress before its purpose is clear. Digital twin is used in different contexts, and NIST notes that there is still no single definition accepted everywhere. Three questions help make sense of a proposal: what does the system represent, how is it updated and what outcome does it support? The answers enable a more useful comparison than the promise of creating a digital copy. A familiar name can cover products with very different purposes.

An operational twin stays connected to a system

In an operational setting, a digital twin may represent a piece of equipment, a building or a process. The model is connected to data about the represented system and may help observe its state or explore scenarios. Update frequency needs to be explained in relation to the intended decision; the term alone does not guarantee instant updates. In a hypothetical building example, the useful question might be where consumption is rising and which change deserves testing. The model’s appearance is only part of the answer.

An avatar provides an audiovisual presence

In video products, digital twin can mean a personal avatar. HeyGen uses the term for a representation built from footage of a person, reproducing aspects of their expression and delivery. Its immediate purpose is communication through image and voice. Evaluation should consider the source material, the person’s agreement, presentation fidelity and control over the message. A convincing visual presence does not establish that the system knows the person’s current opinions or has permission to decide on their behalf.

An agent pursues a task

An AI agent can choose steps and use tools to pursue an objective. Anthropic distinguishes this dynamic organization from workflows whose steps are prescribed in code. For a hypothetical research assistant, the questions become: which sources can it consult, what can it change, when does it request intervention and how is its output checked? An agent can have an avatar or operate entirely in text. Visual presentation and the ability to act are different dimensions of a product.

A better brief

Before selecting technology, describe the user, the situation and the intended outcome. Add what needs representing, the data sources, the update cadence and permitted actions. Then define an observable example of success and failure. One application can combine an operational model, an avatar interface and an agent; each component needs its own justification. This short brief turns a discussion about labels into a conversation about the product, its boundaries and how it will be evaluated.
